THE BATTLE ON PICCADILLY

It was three in the morning when the phone rang. My mum answered and the voice on the other end asked if me and my brother were home which she said yes then the phone went dead. I went to sleep it didn’t seem like two minutes that I had closed my eyes than there were two loud bangs at the door. I looked out of the back window and saw a load of police at the back with dogs barking. I woke my brother up and said ‘this is it we’re getting raided’ as about ten police officers ran up the stairs to our bedroom. They told us to keep calm and don’t do anything stupid as the house was completely surrounded. They then read the conspiracy charges to us, let us have a wash before taking us to separate police stations

After a long day of questioning I was charged with riots and violent disorder. The sergeant joked ‘you don’t even look old enough’ that didn’t stop him charging me though! I was taken to the Central Detention Centre (CDC) above the courts where I met up with the rest who had been nicked. I was surprised to see that certain people were not there and while there were people who should not have been there who had been nicked. As I was a juvenile I was placed in the juvenile cells and in the next door cell was Jamie Roberts. We were the two youngest to be charged. I knew that we would be the only two who would get bail the next day as Jamie was also still in school and was sixteen years old while I was still only fifteen. Everyone was shouting to one another all night and singing City songs.

The next morning we were taken in threes to court – me, my brother and Jimmy G were taken up once in the court after confirming our names and ages. We sat down as I was handcuffed to my brother and Jimmy G was handcuffed to a screw. Once bail was mentioned the prosecution then read out our previous convictions. As they read out Jimmy’s saying that he was locked up for the Moss Side riots, it made the magistrates raise their eyebrows.

They sat staring at me and my brother because we were both black even though they had just been told that we were the Rhoden brothers they then said ‘could Mr. Gittens stand’. As Jimmy did their heads went back and they then repeated it again ‘can Mr. G please stand up’ as jimmy said ‘I am Mr. G ‘ I then said ‘the cheeky cunts’. My solicitor leant over and told me to be quiet. I said ‘they are surprised that jimmy is white and been to jail for the riots, all the rioters were not all black’.

Jimmy and my brother got remanded with 22 others, me and Jamie got bail with conditions that we had to sign on
